I have noticed lately an increase in the number of calls from business owners whose accountants have seemingly taken on Magical Powers. They have mastered the art of disappearing. Cutting off all communication from their clients and effectively ceasing their involvement with them.

When this happens it puts enormous pressure on the business owner because they have been relying on the accountant to meet their accounting deadlines. Suddenly they are left in the lurch by a trusted adviser.

If this wasn’t bad enough the problem is compounded by the fact that, more often than not, the business owner has been kept in the dark by their old accountant.

This may have not been intentional on behalf of the accountant but it happens all the time.

Much like backing up your business data there are ways you can ensure that, if the worst happens, you will still be able to have a smooth handover with your new accountant.

Even if you are completely happy with your accountant you owe it to your business to protect it.

Here is a list of 5 things you needs to do:

  1. When you are sent your tax return, any tax return, ask for a detailed tax computation. This gives you all the calculations you need.
  2. Make sure you have a copy of both your full Accounts and Abbreviated Accounts each year they are prepared.
  3. Ask for a copy of your fixed asset register.
  4. Don’t let your accountant have control over your bookkeeping software
  5. Make sure you have your own access to HMRC and Companies House Portal.

I am not saying you will ever experience the issues caused by a vanishing accountant but just in case you do its worth minimising the impact it will have on your business.

If your accountant has vamoosed then give me a call I can help get you back on track.
