Holiday season is over, traffic is back to normal and we are all back to reality. Holidays are a great time to reflect on your life and assess if things are working out as you had planned.

I for one spent a few hours on holiday trying to assess things from a different point of view and, as a result, got clarity on a few difficult decisions.

When you return from holiday, after you have cleared the inevitable back log, it’s important not to lose the impetus and actually get on with the plans you made whilst sipping cocktails by the pool.

My particular plans were to simplify my life; I had started too many projects during the year and some were suffering a lack of attention.

Projects I was involved in this year:

  • Writing a new book
  • Developing a training course
  • Joining BNI
  • Helping to organise a music festival
  • Managing a renovation project in my office
  • Various DIY projects

I was trying to do all of this along with marketing my business, managing the work, managing my team, recruiting, etc!

The list goes on, needless to say, something had to give – I realised, whilst away, that I wasn’t finding time to exercise and had stopped marketing the business. All of the projects were getting done but at a glacial pace.

To simplify things, I have decided to stop writing the new book (for now), leave BNI, outsource some of the other items and start exercising again.

One week in and I feel good about my holiday decisions.

When was the last time you reviewed your plate to see if you had too much on it?

I now realise that the trick is not to leave this until you are on holiday but to regularly take time out of the business to think about how things are going.
