Yesterday I heard the sad news that comedian Sean Lock had passed away after losing a battle with cancer, far too soon aged only 58. It’s a sad loss indeed, he brought laughter and comedy to many, including myself – I could often be found doubled over in front of the TV watching him 8 out of 10 Cats.

Naturally, this led to some philosophical thinking about life in general I started evaluating the life I lead and the life my clients and fellow owners lead when trying to grow a business.

It got me thinking about how important it is to enjoy the journey and how it can be far too easy to focus on future goals and to not stop and smell the roses every now and again.

I recall a story I was once told about two brothers in the back of a car travelling to the seaside. One brother was goal orientated and fixated on achieving the final goal – the end of the journey – the other, whilst looking forward to the seaside, took pleasure in what he saw on the way, the cows in the fields and the rainbow in the sky.

When the motorway was closed, and the journey couldn’t be completed both boys were understandably disappointed but the first one took it much harder because he was so focused on the goal he didn’t take any pleasure in the journey.

The lesson here is to set goals, work towards them but don’t forget to celebrate the little wins along the way. Growing a business can certainly be stressful, tiring and very time consuming but it should also be fun, exciting, and rewarding.

If you are growing a business and you are not enjoying the process of growth, then it might be time to ask yourself some tough questions: is this the right business for me? What can I do differently to make this better? As the saying goes – ‘you only live once’ and slogging at a business that is not contributing to your life in a positive way is not worth it.
